Takeji Asano Contemporary creative prints

Among Japanese woodblock prints, the most representative work is probably ukiyo-e.

The change in the trend of ``let's live each day with ups and downs'' centered around Edo townspeople led to the spread of the positive idea of ``Ukiyo,'' and from this, painters created images of people's daily lives, resulting in the creation of ``Ukiyo-e.'' “is.

Furthermore, the 1867 World's Fair in Paris sparked a boom called Japonisme, which became popular with many foreigners, including Western painters Van Gogh and Claude Monet.

Even in modern times when various technologies have advanced, the technique of ukiyo-e is unique to Japan, and its fineness can only be realized by hand. The techniques have been passed down from craftsman to craftsman to this day. (The expression of light and atmosphere, which requires delicate line drawings and gradations, incorporates a variety of techniques such as 100-plate 120-color printing.)

At the Paris World Exposition, ukiyo-e set itself apart from previous Western paintings, and its style boldly adopted technical and conceptual multi-view compositions, skillfully handling unique perspectives and senses of presence, and expressing the effects of wind and light. Even movement is incorporated into the prints.

Takeji Asano was born on October 24, 1900 in Kyoto.(1900-1999)

Starting out as a Japanese painter, he went through many hardships after starting woodblock printing, first producing the ``Meisho Print'' series, and later creating the free and creative works introduced in this article, ``Modern Sosaku Print''.

The images he draws are not just depictions of nature, but boldly transform and abbreviate his motifs of humans and animals. However, these motifs perfectly capture the essence of the theme while freely transforming their forms.

Rather, the clearer the form, the more clearly the hidden essence will be imprinted on the screen.

These expressive abilities must have been steadily cultivated through his early production of ``meisho prints.''

Ben Shahn, who deeply understands and sympathizes with his work, praises his ``free imagination, modern and bold forms, and delicate technical skill.''

What can be seen along with the bold shapes is the rich power of expression.

Humor, irony, wit, satire, pathos, and many other qualities make it uniquely appealing. It's by no means serious, but it's not just a casual or abstinence thing either.

Furthermore, there is a deep love and harsh criticism towards humans and nature in general, which attracts viewers.

The artist is a writer who has been able to clearly visualize his thoughts, and there is no doubt that his thoughts exist only in his paintings.

Originally, Japanese woodblock prints were multiple prints of watercolor paintings for distribution, and with the exception of some artists such as Shiko Munakata, most of them were works of boring realism. However, Takeji Asano's works represent a creative world that incorporates modern sensibilities into Japanese woodblock prints, and can be said to be an epoch-making group of works that played a major role in revolutionizing modern woodblock prints.
